New Riders of the Purple Sage

Picture
In the summer of 1969, John Dawson was looking to showcase his songs while Jerry Garcia was looking to practice his brand new pedal steel guitar. The two played in coffeehouses and small clubs initially, and the music they made became the nucleus for a band—the New Riders of the Purple Sage. That same year, David Nelson, expert in both country and rock guitar, joined the group on electric lead guitar. Filling out the rhythm section in those early days were Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart and engineer Bob Matthews on bass, who was later replaced by Phil Lesh. In 1970, Dave Torbert took over on bass and the New Riders played every chance they got. Soon enough, smoky clubs all over the San Francisco bay area were filling up with whooping, foot-stomping crowds as their music got tighter and more dynamic.
They began to tour extensively with the Dead, and in December of 1970, Spencer Dryden, who had previously showed his impeccable drumming style with the Jefferson Airplane, had stepped in on drums.
The New Riders of the Purple Sage received a Lifetime Achievement Award from High Times magazine at their Doobie Awards in September, 2002 and performed a brief set (which included "Loneseome L.A. Cowboy" and "Panama Red" with Peter Rowan) at the festivities at B.B. King's Blues Club in New York City.
Led by David Nelson and Buddy Cage, the current touring lineup includes Michael Falzarano (Hot Tuna) on guitar and vocals, Ronnie Penque on bass and vocals and Johnny Markowski (Stir Fried) on drums and vocals

Desolation Angels

Picture

Once, long ago, on a cold and desolate morning, an un-nameable baby was born. No one was quite sure what to call this certain child of exceeding singularity. His eternally lopsided soul spent much time bouncing off the walls, wreaking havoc and unable to be called upon, before someone thought to shout out "Rock & Roll!" He left home shortly after, and never returned. If you're one of the 4000+ people who have seen Desolation Angels, you know what it must have been like to gaze upon this un-damnable hellion, this ragged rapscallion rouge, and think to yourself, "Just what in tarnation exactly do we call this creature?" That's because Desolation Angels never went to the house Rock & Roll left behind to make it their base of operations. They have no desire to, like infinity, go up on trial forever on the walls of it's halls. Which is why you'll see their smiles mirror everyone's on the dance floor at their shows; ones of exuberant ill concealed ecstasy widening into a much broader variety than that of the Mona Lisa's. Instead they set out to run wild like that beatnik on the road, seeking the spirit of freedom, like Jack Kerouac. And whether you call him Dean Moriarty or Neil Cassidy, it's still the same soul that moves them. On their last two tours, the question most often heard was "What type of music is this?" No one ever seemed to have the same reply. But don't wait for them to come to a town near you, head out on the road to find them and figure it out for yourself. But if you're still not convinced, you should know that they just finished their second tour with Melvin Seals, Stu Allen and JGB and have played with the likes of Phil Lesh, Dark Star Orchestra and Sam Kininger. And this is just the beginning... Desolation Angels - Changing the world one party at a time. www.thedesolationangels.com

Sweet Clementines

Picture
The Sweet Clementines in the “hard to classify” bin. They were born for it. Their home region, New York’s Hudson Valley, is itself a bit of a cultural puzzle, equal parts urban refugee, rifle toting hick, inner city thug and neo-hippie green. You can hear this complex energy working in the psyche-pop songs of The Sweet Clementines, with their easy, rollicking exteriors disguising a depth of musical sophistication and ambitious word craft--songs that encompass surrealist pastiche, Tin Pan Alley classicism and grad-student confessional. It’s quirky, folky, heartfelt and expertly played stuff. Group members include: John Burdick (guitar, songs, keyboards and vocals) Chris Tanis (guitar, songs, ukulele and vocals) Matty Senzatimore (drums) Jason Sarubbi (bass, vocals and recordilating) and Marianne Tasick (vocals and violin).

Mr. Roper

Picture
Long Story Short... During an after-hours jam session at a Woodstock radio station, Rick recorded a version of The Band tune, 'Christmas Must be Tonight' with Jason Sarubbi (The Trapps).  When they started giving the song some airplay, they needed a name for the band.  Perhaps they had been too much 'Nick at Nite', but Mr. Roper was born.  A few years later, Rick began having the itch to perform again in the Hudson Valley.  One morning, local singer/songwriter Eric Squindo strolled into the studio of a radio station where Rick was now working as host of the morning show, 'Up & Running' (98.1 WKZE).  A friendship was quickly formed.  Together, they chose to resurrect Mr. Roper.  They now perform as a duo, but have plans to expand someday soon.
